If so, you are experiencing tooth sensitivity. Tooth sensitivity is common, and most people experience it at some point. If you have tooth sensitivity regularly, it can be an indication that there is a problem with your oral health. Tooth sensitivity can also occur after certain dental treatments, such as a filling, a dental crown, or a root canal. Before and after treatment, we tell patients about this side effect so they are not surprised when they feel discomfort.
What Causes Tooth Sensitivity?
Your teeth are composed of various layers. The outer layer is known as the enamel and is the hardest substance in the body. However, tooth enamel is not indestructible. In fact, it is very easy to damage tooth enamel when you do not care for your teeth properly. Tooth sensitivity often occurs when the tooth enamel is damaged or compromised. Tooth sensitivity may be the result of:
- Brushing teeth too hard or using a hard-bristled toothbrush
- Receding gums
- Tooth decay
- Gum disease
- Cracked or chipped tooth
- Teeth grinding
- Excessive teeth whitening
How to Help Tooth Sensitivity
If you experience tooth sensitivity regularly, one of the first things you should do is evaluate how you brush your teeth. Do you brush hard or use vigorous motions? If so, you are not brushing your teeth correctly and are doing more harm than good. Brushing hard does not mean that you are cleaning your teeth better. Be sure to use gentle strokes with a soft-bristled toothbrush. There are also many toothpastes formulated specifically for tooth sensitivity. We are more than happy to demonstrate the proper way to clean the teeth the next time you are in for a visit.
